Part A: Write a thesis statement that answers the question, "In this song, what does the speaker mean when he refers to the curse?" Part B: Find two quotes from the song lyrics that you could use to prove that you are right about the curse.

Assignment 10 - Open Response Writing
Here is one of your classmate's responses to the prompt about Juliet's reaction to Tybalt's death. In this discussion section on this page, feel free to comment on things you notice this student did particularly well.
Juliet's reaction was odd because she should be more upset that Tybalt is dead, and she should be mad at Romeo for killing him. When Juliet hears that Tybalt has been killed, she is more concerned about Romeo. The nurse is very upset that Tybalt is dead, and extremely mad at Romeo, while Juliet thinks the nurse should be ashamed for saying Romeo should be in shame. At 3.2.91, Juliet says, "Blistered by thy tongue for such a wish! He was not born to shame. Upon his brow shame is ashamed to sit, for 'tis throne where honor may be crowned. Sole monarch of the universal earth, Oh what a beast I was to chide at him!" Instead of agreeing with the nurse, Juliet yells at her for calling Romeo shameful. This is a surprising reaction from Juliet because you would expect her to be more upset at Romeo for killing her cousin.
Juliet's reaction is also strange because she is more upset about Romeo's banishment [than she is about Tybalt's death]. Tybalt's death seems the least of Juliet's worries, because she is in more pain that Romeo has been banished. In...3.2.114, she says, "That 'banished,' that one word 'banished' hath slain ten thousand Tybalts." Juliet thinks that Romeo's banishment is more painful to her than the death of ten thousand Tybalts, so she reacts by being more concerned about Romeo. Juliet scorns the nurse for putting shame on Romeo, but also didn't seem very concerned that he killed her cousin. Juliet's reaction was strange, because she wasn't upset that Tybalt was dead, and was more concerned that Romeo was banished."
Santina: Something this writer did well was in the first paragraph how s/he explained how the quote goes with her 1 main idea.
Candy: One thing the reader did well was her/his usage of the quotes with their explanation about how Juliet's reaction was considered " odd " .
Brayan: the reader intrudes a quote, shows the quote, and then explain how the quote relates to the oppening sentence.
